Fenelon Falls

In 1874, the village of Fenelon Falls was incorporated. Then in 1876, the Victoria Railway reached Fenelon Falls. The village was booming. In 1885 construction of the a lock between Cameron and Sturgeon lake literally begin with a bang. The excavators were using a new explosive known as dynamite to blow rocks out of the prospective lock pits. They under-estimated this new blasting agent's strength and sent chunks of limestone flying into the air and crashing through the roofs of buildings more than a hundred metres away. Maryboro Lodge -Museum

The Maryboro Lodge is located on Oak Street and was once the home of Captain James Wallis who built the squared timber building as his home in 1837. Wallis named his home Maryboro after his 14,000 acre estate in County Cork, Ireland. Today the building is a museum and home to over 3,000 objects, native artifacts, pioneer utensils and implements and turn-of- the-century antiques and collectibles, including china, glassware and vintage clothing. There is also a replica one-room school, typical of the era, complete with books and slates.

The museum is open from May to Thanksgiving and offers a number of summer activities including afternoon teas on Wednesdays and music concerts on Sundays during July and August. Admission free, donations appreciated. For further details about performers please call 887 1044. more...
